APD WEEK 09 MATERIALITY

CONTEXT:

She Lights The Night : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOU2kjWp9jg

This is 'She Lights The Night', an animation created by long exposure photographer Darren "Darius Twin" Pearson using 1,012 individually light painted photographs to create a whimsical, dreamlike video.

In ancient philosophy, any attenuated "thin" matter such as air, aether, fire or light was considered incorporeal. ... In modern philosophy, a distinction between the incorporeal and immaterial is not necessarily maintained: a body is described as incorporeal if it is not made out of matter.

Light is Immaterial. In the work of "Materiality of Light Series" represents an exploration of the distortion and textural qualities of video projection in intersection with physical form -- particularly clay forms with a strong sense of materiality. The forms are developed around the limiting factor that each piece will be paired with a single data projector, and therefore the projection area must be shaped so that light can reach it from a single point.  The forms are also limited by the intention to have the projection hit the surface at different angles, causing distortions to the pixel grid. The creator consider the pattern of pixels inherent to the projection process to be analogous to a kind of "materiality", in the sense that any medium has fundamental qualities that can either be hidden (considered as flaws), or celebrated and exploited as a kind of aesthetic of authenticity.

Therefore, in this week's exercise. We decided to transfer the light from immaterial to material and make connection between them with digital technology.

METHOD:

Long-exposure, time-exposure, or slow-shutter photography involves using a long-duration shutter speed to sharply capture the stationary elements of images while blurring, smearing, or obscuring the moving elements. Long-exposure photography captures one element that conventional photography does not: an extended period of time.

The paths of bright moving objects become clearly visible. Only bright objects leave visible trails, whereas dark objects usually disappear.

Place : National park

Jenny : Photographer. (long exposures to take pictures).

Everyone has different theme/concept.

Wayne: Game (Tetris) | Sophia: Snake | Jenny: Angel | Phoebe: Fireworks | Si: Butterfly / Fireflies | Qiannv: Trees

| Stark : Human

REFLECTION:

I was not really familiar with photography so it was my first attempt to connect material and immaterial in this way. A big group work in this weekly exercise. We borrowed the equipments and made everything in order.

Final editing : Wayne | Phoebe
